Content vs Commerce

Squarespace and Shopify are both excellent platforms, but they excel at different things. Squarespace is a website builder with commerce features. Shopify is a commerce platform with website features. That distinction matters enormously for creators.

The Design Question

Squarespace's design capabilities are in a different league. The templates are stunning, the editor is intuitive, and the resulting sites look professional without any design skills. Shopify's themes have improved, but they still feel like store templates rather than full websites. If your brand depends on aesthetics, Squarespace wins.

If you sell fewer than 20 products and your website serves primarily as a portfolio, blog, or brand presence, Squarespace is almost certainly the better choice. Switch to Shopify only when commerce becomes your primary activity.

Commerce Power

Shopify is the undisputed champion of e-commerce. Inventory management, shipping calculations, tax handling, multi-channel selling (Instagram, Amazon, TikTok), and a massive app ecosystem make it the right choice for serious product businesses. Squarespace's commerce tools are adequate for simple stores but cannot match Shopify's depth.

The Creator Angle

Most creators are not running inventory-heavy product businesses. They sell digital products, merch drops, and maybe a few physical items. For this use case, Squarespace's commerce features are usually sufficient, and the superior content and design tools tip the balance. But if you are scaling a merch brand or running a full online store, Shopify's infrastructure is worth the trade-off in design flexibility.

Blogging and Content

Squarespace's blogging engine is far superior. Clean typography, flexible layouts, built-in SEO, and newsletter integration make it a proper content platform. Shopify's blog is functional but clearly an afterthought, with limited formatting, basic SEO, and no built-in newsletter tools.

Pricing Comparison

Squarespace starts at $16/month (Personal) with commerce on the Business plan at $33/month. Shopify starts at $39/month for Basic. Both charge transaction fees on certain plans. For creators with modest commerce needs, Squarespace offers more value per dollar.
